Michael Goldman is a Principal at Apex Analytics, where he supports clients on a range of issues related to the ongoing energy transition. Michael has been active in the energy industry for nearly 20 years and over the course of his career has gained experience as an evaluator, implementor, technology vendor, and utility regulatory witness.

While at Apex, Michael has led major stakeholder engagement initiatives with a focus on best-in-class facilitation. He has worked extensively on tariff development and rate modeling, including the impacts of electrification, solar expansion, and net metering policies. Michael has crafted climate compliance plans for utilities and explored non-pipeline alternatives, supported hundreds of millions of dollars in grant applications, and advised on transmission projects with an emphasis on return on equity and cost management. He also helps climatetech startups navigate the utility landscape and identify high-potential markets for entry.

Prior to joining Apex, Michael worked at an energy technology company focused on the manufacture and optimization of distributed energy resources (DERs) and the development of distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) control platforms.  Michael was integral to the development of DER programs and accessing utility and wholesale markets in order to maximize revenue opportunities for DERs.

Previously, Michael spent nearly 10 years working at Eversource Energy, the largest utility in New England, where he led a team of over 35 individuals responsible for EM&V, Regulatory, and Demand Response/Peak Load Management for a $500M+ portfolio.  Michael established and led some of the most innovative DER programs, including the development of some of the first mixed asset virtual power plants to be aligned to the distribution grid topology. At Eversource, Michael was at the intersection of energy efficiency, demand response, grid modernization, rates, system planning, engineering, and operations. Michael has testified in front of multiple state utility regulatory commissions on issues ranging from electric vehicles to performance-based ratemaking metrics.

Michael received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completed his Master of Arts degree at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), where he focused on energy policy and international finance. He is a regular presenter at industry conferences and has had articles included in numerous industry publications.
